Talented linebacker LaDarius Owens talks about his decision to be an Auburn Tiger.
Commitment Spotlight: LaDarius Owens
How many years have you been playing football:
"7th grade, 11th & 12th grade."
What do you like most about football:
"We are all big football fans, and I have developed a love for it. I like being able to compete and hit people without getting into trouble. It's just a fun thing you can do, and it is something I love to do."
How does football help prepare you for life:
"It teaches you team work, discipline and how to work with other people. It also teaches you how to compete and helps you with toughness."
Finish this sentence: It is important to show character on and off the field because:
Because I know I have a lot of little cousins looking up to me as well as classmates and teammates. I believe good character takes you a long way."
What person has had the greatest impact on your life and why:
"My uncle. He was the first African-American to ever play football at Auburn, and he endured a lot and is a very strong man. I can go to him about anything."
What helps motivate you for the game on Friday nights:
"I just know that whenever people tell me I can't do something, it motivates me to prove them wrong."
How do you motivate yourself, day in and day out, to work hard in the weight room and on the field during practice:
"I just think about all the stuff my mom has done for me to give me the opportunity to play football. I want to someday be in the position to help her. She has sacrificed a lot for me."
In the classroom, how important is it to give 100 percent and why:
"Very important. If I bring home a C, I probably would not be allowed to go to practice. My mom is very big on academics because she thinks I am capable of more."
Kids look up to you everyday. How do you want them to see in your life:
"The fact that I don't make excuses for stuff I don't have, or what people say I am not supposed to be able to do. I work hard for everything I want."
After a practice and after a game on Friday night, what image do you want to portray to others:
"Always have my head up regardless of the situation, regardless of a win or loss. I want to try and pick my teammates up win or lose. I also want to be a good person and a young man of character."
What is your greatest memory while playing high school football thus far:
"When we beat Minor."
Your team's greatest rival:
"Minor and Hueytown."
What is your true goal in life:
"Education first. My dream is to play professional football, but I know I want to go to college and earn a degree so that I can take care of my mom."
What is the greatest your mom ever taught you:
"She has always taught me to say yes mam and yes sir. I didn't have my father, so a lot of people thought I wouldn't stay out of trouble. She taught me that I can do whatever I want to do as long as I try hard and keep God first."
What is one of the toughest trials you have ever had to face and how did you get through it:
"We lost something in our family, and I watched a family member go through a really hard time. I felt like I couldn't do anything to help. That trial taught me to have faith in God and just see it through."
What do you want to accomplish before you enter college:
"Graduate high school and lead my team further than anybody expects us to go."
A true champion is:
"A true champion is someone who is always willing to persevere and encourage others."
What are you looking most forward to going to Auburn:
