Coach Spotlight: Jarrick Williams
Posted Jul 6, 2009
Last year was Coach Kevin Sigler's first season on the job as head football coach at Mattie T. Blount, in Eight Mile, Ala. He saw his team go 5-5 with a first round exit in the playoffs. The 2009 team only returns eight starters (4 offense, 4 defense), but they have some key players returning. The talented Jarrick Williams projects as the cornerstone of the defensive unit.
The 6-foot-2, 195 lbs. free safety committed to the University of
on 6/28, and is primed for a stellar senior campaign.
"Jarrick's a tremendous athlete," says Sigler. "He loves to game, plays very physical and aggressive."
Williams wears No. 20 for the Leopards. Last season he recorded 94 tackles and two interceptions.
"Jarrick's done a great job for us," Sigler said. "He does what we ask him to do. He has all the skills you look for and a good knowledge of the game seems to come naturally to him."
"He's got a solid all-around game on run support, pass coverage, and he's been a leader for us on the field. He doesn't say much, but leads by example. The kids look up to him and watch what he does and rally around his enthusiasm."
picked Alabama in a tight race with in-state rival
, but as many as 25 schools had offered scholarships with
heavily involved in Williams' recruitment.
When Sigler took over he started watching film and knew he recognized some serious talent.
"He stood out right away," said Sigler. "I could see how fast he played and with an excellent understanding of the game. I sent his film out and schools got interested in a hurry."
"Jarrick's a quiet guy, laid-back, kind of likes to keep to himself," says Sigler. "He loves his teammates and being around them."
With the college decision now behind him, Williams looks to focus on football and classroom.
"He's a good student and hard worker. He should be fine," Sigler commented.
For Williams 2009 is about readying himself for the road ahead.
"When he gets to the next level, he'll (Williams) need to understand that everybody's just as fast as he is," Sigler said. "That will take some adjusting to at first. He needs to keep studying film, and continue to improve to taking the correct angles on tackling. Once he gets that down he should be a fun player to watch."
Blount plays a pre-season game with McGill-Toolen and then begins regular season play August 29th with LeFlore.
