ScoutSouth.com: Hartselle versus Russellville
Posted Nov 20, 2008
The Hartselle Tigers and the Russellville Golden Tigers have already fought-it-out once this season, but both teams knew there was a good chance they would meet again in the Class 5A state playoffs. ScoutSouth.com caught up with Hartselle’s Coach Bob Godsey earlier in the week, and he shared his thoughts about this week’s quarterfinal rematch.
Russellville and Hartselle played a classic smash-mouth football game earlier in the season, and the Hartselle Tigers came out on top by the score of 24-14. The victory helped assure Hartselle of an undefeated regular season and a top five ranking in every poll in the state.
Russellville didn’t fall far from their No. 1 ranking after the loss as they won the remainder of the games on their schedule and remained in the top 10 throughout the season.
It makes no difference how you view this game, it is two heavyweight programs going toe-to-toe and the winner will move to the semifinals, and possibly a berth in the Super Six held at Birmingham’s Legion Field.
talked about the upcoming game with the Golden Tigers of Russellville.
“There has been a lot of water under the bridge since our first game with Russellville, so we haven’t focused on that very much at all,” Coach Godsey stated.
“You always know what you’re going to get when you play Russellville. They are always going to be well coached, they will always have good athletes, and they are always going to play you a hard-nosed game.”
“It doesn’t seem to matter what sport it is, when Hartselle and Russellville get together you always have a competitive match."
While Coach Godsey likes the play of some of his players he is quick to point out the Tigers' team concept.
“We have been successful this season because we have played steady all year. Every player has been steady throughout the season," he said.
"If I had to choose one area that we have made progress in this season it would be special teams. Our special teams have improved throughout the season. They will never be as consistent as I would like, but that’s where we have improved the most."
What are the key elements for a victory in this contest?
“It’s going to be a hard fought football game, and I believe the team that makes a mistake, or the team that can capitalize off of a mistake will win the game,” Coach Godsey concluded.
