The number one team in Class 5A loses to Erwin. Hartselle dominates Athens. Cordova bounces back after their first loss in nearly two years. Winston County makes a statement, and Hazlewood is setting the grass on fire with their rushing attack. That is just a few of the games you can read about in this week’s “game recaps.”

Addison: The Addison Bulldogs found themselves in a dog-fight with the Cold Springs Eagles Friday night, as it took a last play defensive stand for Addison to hang on for their third win of the season.

Addison seemingly put the game away with just less than three minutes to play when Cole Hayes found Jake Russell for a 19-yard touchdown pass to put the Bulldogs up 12-6.

Coach Randy White sent the kicking team into the game to kick the extra point, but instead opted for a fake, and Blake Robinson carried the ball into the end zone to put the Bulldogs up 14-6.

Cold Springs took their next possession at their own 20-yard line, with little time left on the clock. With one second remaining the Eagles snapped the ball, and quarterback T.J. Aby hit Jacob Garmon for a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Cold Springs had to try a two-point play to get the game into overtime, but Addison’s Blake Denny stopped the Eagles cold at the line-of-scrimmage, and the miracle comeback ended as the Bulldogs held on for a 14-12 victory.

Blake Robinson led the Bulldogs rushing attack with 141-yards on 21 carries and a two-point conversionon. Cole Hayes completed only two-of-five passing for 25 yards, but both completions were good for touchdowns.

Center Point: The top ranked team in Class 5A took a tumble Friday night, as Erwin knocked the Cullman Bearcats out of the number one ranking by a score of 25-20.

Cullman took a 14-12 lead in at the halfway point of the game, but the Bearcats knew they were in for a fight. Erwin was able to control one of the state’s best quarterbacks, as Tyler Caldwell was held to a season low 168-yards and one touchdown.

Erwin took control of the line-of-scrimmage from the beginning, and by the end of the game had dominated the Bearcats on both sides of the ball.

Marqueze O’Neal returned a Cullman kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, and Erwin’s quarterback Anthony Bowie finished the game seven-of-19 for 137 yards, and one touchdown.

Hartselle: The Hartselle Tigers made another statement this week as they defeated rival Athens by a final of 35-0. The Tigers are on a roll, and will likely move up in this week’s poll after Cullman lost to the Eagles of Erwin.

The Tigers totally dominated Coach Allen Creasy’s Golden Eagles from the opening second of the game, until the final second ticked off the clock.

The Tigers have put together a very impressive six game winning streak to bring their record to a perfect 6-0 on the season. The Tigers have beaten Class 5A, Russellville, (No. 1 at the time), Class 3A Cordova, (No. 1 at the time), and Class 5A rival, Athens.

Marquez Jones led all rushers with 122 yards on 16 carries. Jones also rushed for three touchdowns. The Tiger defense limited the Golden Eagles to 174-yards of total offense.
