Russellville takes a long road trip

The Russellville Golden Tigers have long been a steady power in North Alabama since the 60s, and they proved this week that one loss does not ruin a season. It took the Golden Tigers two days to make the trek south to the Mobile area, where they took on defending 5A state champion, St. Paul’s.
Alabama
commitment,
AJ McCarron
will remember the Golden Tigers from Russellville as the strong Tiger defense held the coveted quarterback to only three completions and 55 yards passing.
On the other side of the ball junior signal caller
Joey Howe
is fast becoming a player college coaches are showing interest. Howe has a large frame at 6-6, which allows him to see the field nicely. He also has a strong arm and a good delivery.
Howe passed for 211 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Tigers showed no signs of being a weary traveler. They laid a 41-7 whipping on the defending state champion.
The Russellville defense was relentless all evening as they limited the high power offensive attack to less than three yards per play. They also got consistent pressure on McCarron from the out-set of the game.
Howe connected with wide receiver,
Nathan McAlister
for a 35-yard touchdown pass, while
Brent Calloway
added the first of his two touchdowns to give the Golden Tigers an early 14-0 first quarter lead. Russellville never looked back as they continued the domination.
The Saints will try to rebound next week as they take on region opponent, Vigor. That is not an easy task.
The Russellville Golden Tigers will host a one-win Muscle Shoals team after returning home Saturday night, or early Sunday morning.
The Tigers will need a break after the long road trip, but Coach Scott Basden will have his squad ready to play when they make the short trip to Russellville.
