North Jackson Takes to the Air

Tana Patrick

The top-ranked 4A North Jackson Chiefs rolled over Columbia 47-19 Friday night via a passing game that sent several school records falling. Before the night was over, the Chiefs had set new standards for single game pass attempts, completions, yards, and tied the old standard for touchdowns.

In addition, junior quarterback Will Richard and sophomore wide receiver Montel Hale turned in record individual performances in the contest.

Richard completed 32-of-38 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns to enter the record books, and Hale caught 15 of those passes to shatter the existing single game record for receptions.

The old standards for passing were 28 attempts, 15 completions and 199 yards, so Richard raced past those. The old NJHS record for receptions in a game had been five before Friday night, so Hale tripled that record with his 15 catches.

Between Richard and backup quarterback Zach Barnard, North Jackson attempted a team record 40 passes, completing 34 for 358 yards and three touchdowns (tied the team record). It was an impressive showing from the Chiefs.

North Jackson also had stellar performances from A.J. Matthews and Tana Patrick. Matthews scored three touchdowns on the ground and one receiving, while Patrick scored on a run and a pass. Zack Hammontree and Patrick led the Chiefs' defense with eight tackles each.

North Jackson will travel to Fort Payne this week to battle the undefeated and 5A ranked Wildcats in a non-region game. The game is the renewal of a rivalry that has been dormant for the past few years and looks to be a huge battle between unbeatens from different classifications.
