6A - Region 1
Davidson 3-0 (2-0) wins over Blount and Mary Montgomery; up next Baker
Coach Fred Riley has his fourth-ranked Warriors with a 3-0 record, surprising many, but Riley told ScoutSouth.com in the spring of 2007 that he had some special athletes in his sophomore class with amazing speed. They are maturing and the wins are coming. After a scintillating win over Daphne in a non-region matchup 35-10, the offense has only put up 27 points in two games, but that was enough to win both.
They will face three tough opponents in consecutive weeks starting with the September 26 game against undefeated, third-ranked McGill-Toolen in a non-region matchup followed by Theodore and Williamson. Undefeated Murphy is their last region game on October 25th.
Murphy 3-0 (2-0) wins over Baker and Williamson; up next Alma Bryant
Coach Ronn Lee’s squad won their opener against Foley 14-3, and quarterback Matt Rowser has shown a lot of poise for the Panthers in their three-win start.
Murphy faces one of the most grueling schedules with a non-region game September 27th against Daphne, followed by Blount, Theodore, Mary Montgomery, Davidson, and Region 2 co-leader McGill-Toolen.
Theodore 2-1 (2-0) wins over Mary Montgomery and Baker; up next Blount
Coach Bill Meredith’s Bobcats have rebounded after a head-scratching loss to open the season against 4A Hillcrest-Evergreen 21-20. They won their next two starts and ScoutSouth.com’s Player of the Week for week two, the defensive gem, C.J. Mosley.
Theodore gets an open date on September 26th, then must face Davidson, Williamson and Murphy down the stretch in region games.
Blount 2-1 (1-1) win over Alma Bryant and loss to Davidson; up next Theodore
Coach Kevin Sigler’s Bayou La Batre team has done little wrong. Their only loss at fourth-ranked Davidson’s hand was a touchdown difference and that score came mid-way through the fourth quarter.
Blount goes against Theodore this week and then gets an open date before facing Murphy and Mary Montgomery. They end the regular season with Williamson and a tough non-region opponent, 11th ranked 5A Vigor.
Williamson 1-2 (1-1) win over Alma Bryant and loss to Murphy; up next Mary Montgomery
Coach Bobby Parrish’s Lions scored 28 points against Vigor in their season opening game. Unfortunately, they allowed 36. Over the winless Alma Bryant, they won 24-14. Murphy overwhelmed them in the fourth quarter last week, scoring three touchdowns with a little more than half of the fourth quarter remaining, to win 31-13.
Williamson, bitten by the injury bug to a leading receiver with a broken ankle, quarterback and center, would probably like to have an idle weekend, but they do not. Mary Montgomery is prime to upset the Lions if they can’t get well or find some able replacements.
Their last three region games will start on October 9 at Davidson followed by home games against Theodore and Blount.
Winless teams in the region are Alma Bryant, Baker, and a better than the record shows, Mary Montgomery.
6A - Region 2
McGill-Toolen 3-0 (2-0) wins over Fairhope and Robertsdale; up next Daphne
Coach Terry Curtis of UMS-Wright (4A) said after their 41-17 loss to the Yellow Jackets in the season opener “I hope they are that good.” They may just be. Coach Keith Powell took his 2007 team to the semi-finals in his first year replacing Coach Steve Savarese with an undefeated record only to lose to eventual champion, Prattville, 21-0.
Coach Powell’s Jackets did not forget how it was done in the off-season. With a three-win scoring total of 123 to 33, it is hard to see much getting in their way to another region championship, except two new region opponents Daphne and Foley.
Quarterback Cullen Wacker has done little wrong and with two running backs reaching the century-mark in last week’s game. It has been hard to see a weakness offensively or defensively for this team. The road gets tougher with Daphne this week, out of region opponent and fourth-ranked Davidson followed by Satsuma and another out of region game against the defensively talented Poets of Sidney Lanier.
They will come home to face Foley and on the road to face Baldwin County finishing region play. For good measure, they end their season at home against region 1 co-leader Murphy.
Foley 2-1 (2-0) wins over Baldwin County and Fairhope; up next Robertsdale
Coach Todd Watson’s team is facing football life in the post-Julio Jones era. In the first week, the future looked bleak with a 14-3 loss to Murphy, but the Lions have bounced back. They had a big 45-7 performance over Baldwin County in the second week. They reverted a bit last week with a 14-10 win over Fairhope, with Darius Powell leading the way passing for 168 yards.
Foley will face their rival, Daphne, the first weekend in October followed by Satsuma and McGill-Toolen.
Daphne 2-1 (1-0) win over Satsuma; up next McGill-Toolen
Davidson probably stunned Daphne in the first week of the season handing them a 35-10 defeat, but Coach Glenn Vickery gathered his team’s pride and defeated Mitchell High School out of Tennessee 42-26 and last week giving Satsuma their first loss of the season in resounding fashion, 56-6.
Third ranked McGill-Toolen lay ahead this week. Then an out of region game with Murphy. Foley and Baldwin County are their opponents the following two weeks.
Satsuma 2-1 (1-1) win over Robertsdale loss to Daphne; up next Pensacola
Coach Lonnie Rawlins' first year at Satsuma got off to a good start with wins over 5A B.C. Rain 20-6 and Robertsdale 22-15 before running into the Trojans.
The Gators will start October with McGill-Toolen followed by Foley, Baldwin County and Fairhope.
Baldwin County 2-1 (0-1) loss to Foley; up next Fairhope
The Tigers have a tough road to hoe with McGill-Toolen, Daphne, Satsuma and out of region opponent Theodore lying in wait.
Fairhope owns one win out of region, but two losses in region. Robertsdale is winless thus far.
6A - Region 3
Opelika 3-0 (2-0) wins over Russell County and Dothan; up next Enterprise
One of the best things about high school football is that in a region like this with three undefeated teams, there is not any guessing who is better, they will all meet and it should work itself out. The top-ranked Bulldogs of Opelika have won their first three games by a margin of 119 to 26. Smiths Station has put up a 133 to 34 gap, while Auburn has outscored it’s opponents 111 to 42, but they have yet to meet each other.
Coach Spence McCracken will face a season of lasts this year, and the Bulldogs will try to send him out in fine fettle. They won their season opener against Sidney Lanier 30-6 and then defeated region opponents, Russell County and Dothan easily.
They face Enterprise this week with a 1-2 (0-2) record. Gone off Opelika’s schedule are mid-season dates with out of region opponents Prattville and a late season game with Tuscaloosa County. In their place are 5A 11th ranked Vigor on September 26th and an open date on October 31st.
Linebacker Josh Rowe is an overlooked college prospect with outstanding ability. You need only note that a former opponent, Prattville coach Bill Clark has tendered the Bulldog his only scholarship offer thus far to South Alabama.
Opelika will face Smiths Station on October 17th and their rival Auburn in their last regular season game on October 24th. Auburn has won this matchup only once since 1995.
Auburn 3-0 (2-0) wins over Dothan and Enterprise; up next Northview
Auburn lost their powerful running back combo of the Ross cousins last year, and All-State defensive back Dee Finley to graduation. Coach Tim Carter’s Tigers have not truly been tested, but they are surprising any doubters with their decisive victories.
Auburn may have found what they needed in Quarterback Calvin Jenkins who had 263 total yards Friday night against Enterprise. It probably helps to have one of the best offensive linemen in the state blocking for you in John Sullen who holds several top tier scholarship offers.
The Tigers’ game this week might be a little more difficult than in the last few years. Northview defeated Central-Phenix City last week after losing in a lopsided affair to Smiths Station the week before. This could be a good measuring stick until we get to the matchups of these three contenders.
Auburn plays Smiths Station on October 3rd and Opelika on October 24th. These are games to keep an eye on.
Smiths Station 3-0 (2-0) wins over Northview and Russell County; up next Dothan
Coach Mark Rose left his cozy quarters in North Jackson, a football program that wins consistently, and has a large happy bunch of boosters for a program at Smiths Station where the players were devastated to lose Coach Woodrow Lowe last season with his unceremonious dismissal.
Mark Rose surprises everyone and takes the job. He walks into the Panther top job with his sparking 100-16 overall record and his region record at North Jackson of 58-2 and maybe some hurt feelings start feeling a little less painful.
Rose has implemented an ambitious strength-training program, and his Panthers have bought into his program. Quarterback Cody Hussey, running back Chris Whitehorn and Robert Frinks can put up some big numbers for Rose on the ground, and Hussey passes with a near 70-percent completion ratio.
The Panthers have Auburn on October 3rd at home and travel to Opelika on October 17th.
Northview 2-1 (1-1) and Central- Phenix City 2-1 (1-1) will probably battle for that fourth playoff spot. Northview would have an advantage if they were tied with a win over Central last week.
Russell County, Enterprise, and Dothan are winless in the region thus far.
6A - Region 4
Wetumpka 3-0 (2-0) wins over Stanhope Elmore and Sidney Lanier; up next Prattville
Wetumpka is the only overall undefeated team in this region. The test will come this week when the Indians face the fifth-ranked Prattville Lions, the other team that is undefeated in the region, but has an out of region loss on the record.
If Coach Chad Anderson’s team repeats last week’s performance of seven turnovers, it could get ugly but only if Prattville can hold their offense together as they too have played fast and loose with the ball at times.
The Indians have yet to break the 20-point mark in any of their three games including a season opening win over 5A Demopolis 12-7. They defeated Stanhope Elmore 19-0 and Sidney Lanier 14-6.
You must admit if your offense gives the ball up seven times (four fumbles and three interceptions) and you only give up six points, you might have a good defense. The Poets coughed the ball up four times themselves.
Region 4 is a seven-team region. After the Prattville game, Wetumpka finishes their region play with three opponents with a combined overall record of 0-9.
Prattville 2-1 (2-0) wins over Lee and Benjamin Russell; up next Wetumpka
The Lions traveled to Ohio to play St. Xavier, a team that is normally a national powerhouse, but this time Prattville was the favorite. Some critical turnovers would see the Lions fall 15-10 in their first loss in 30 games.
Stanhope Elmore 2-1 (1-1) and Sidney Lanier 2-1 (1-1) look like they could shore up the third and fourth spots in this region pretty easily.
Region 1 will face Region 2 in the first round of the playoffs while Region 3 and Region 4 will match up. This is different from the two precious years when the Auburn area teams matched up with Mobile teams in the first round.
