The Satsuma Gators are 2-2 in Class 6A Region 2 and looking for a win this week after a two-game…

"Our strengths are on defensive line led by Jamian Spear (senior) and Russ Raines (senior)," coach Thomas said of the strengths of this 2008 squad. "Also, offensive line led by Devin Crawford (senior), Clay Squires (junior), and Jonathan Parnell (sophomore). We are big in the trenches."
"We have quality running backs in Daniel Manning (junior) and Greg Brown (senior)."
"Our quarterback, J.T. Baxter, is returning after a quality junior season. We have one of the best wide receivers in the region with Allen Boasten (senior). He is a guy you can throw it up to, and he will find a way to catch it. We are young in several spots."
Satsuma had a win on the road last week over 4A opponent B.C. Rain, 20-6.
"Well, we play five or six guys both ways, and they all started cramping in the second half," Thomas said of things learned in first game of the season. "We must take care of them during the week and provide them with plenty of water."
"We run a high-tempo spread offense, so we like to run as many offensive plays as we can. Our plan against Rain was to run screen after screen to wear them down, but we didn't take into consideration that we were wearing our two-way players down as well."
"Lastly, we jumped on them 20-0 and got complacent. Kids must get that killer attitude and finish strong."

Devin Crawford (OL, 6-0, 300)
Clay Squires (OL, 6-1, 265)
Jonathan Parnell (OL, 6-3, 275)
Brett Hollie (LB, 5-9, 180)
Jamian Spear (DL, 6-3, 270/4.8)
Russ Raines (DL, 6-2, 260)
Kirkland Brackett (DE, 6-1, 220)
Lankston Stallworth (DB, 5-10,165/sophomore)
Daniel Manning (Punt return/Kick return, 4.4)
Coach Thomas talked more of the players who he believes can play on the next level.
"Greg Brown is 5-11, 189 right now with 4.57 speed," he said. "He plays basketball as well, which keeps him out of the weight room. Greg is a very smart guy. Scored a 20 on ACT on his first try with a 3.5 GPA."
"He is receiving a ton of mail from various schools around the southeast, but no offers yet. He has never participated in any camps. He is some what of an unknown."
"Jamian Spear is 6-3, 270 and can run. He runs from sideline-to-sideline. He didn't play much last year. His family situation effected him last year to where he seldom came to practice."
"He has not missed a practice, workout, or meeting since the new staff came in. He is extremely strong. This kid can play any where he wants. Has some work to do in the classroom."
"Russ Raines is 6-2, 260, who is another smart guy with size and speed. He has received interest from the military academys."
"Allen Boasten is a WB/DB for us. He is just a great ball player. He plays the ball well. His speed is 4.7, but plays faster on the field."
"Daniel Manning is a junior who plays everything for us. He is a 4.4 guy with great hips. He will be highly recruited once I get him some exposure. He cleans 315 at 5-9, 185."
"The South Alabama staff was very impressed with him at camp. He was their top wide out at camp. We have to get him to camps this summer."
"JT Baxter is our quarterback. He is also our best basketball player. He sees the field well and stands 6-3, 170. He has a quality arm."
"Devin Crawford is my left guard at 6-0, 300. He needs to lose weight. He is the strongest football player I have ever had. Good feet at his size. Won offensive line MVP at Southern Miss camp. His height is holding him back."
"We have several sophomores who start and play for us that will be able to play next level."
"Jonathan Parnell is a 6-3, 275 right guard. I have never been more impressed with a young offensive lineman in my career. He has a great work ethic."
"Antwain Bruner is a 6-1, 270 DL. He is very strong and thick for a young guy. He really showed out at the UAB camp here in Mobile. Their coaches loved him."
"Clay Squires is a 6-1, 265 junior left tackle. He is a great athlete with a big frame. I put him at left tackle to protect J.T.'s blind side. He has extremely good feet. I will move him inside next year. That will be where he plays on the next level."
"Donald Bush is a sophomore starting corner. He stands 5-9, 165, and runs a 4.6 right now. He will get faster as he gets older."
Satsuma faces Robertsdale this week, a region opponent. They were beat handedly last week by 5A Gulf Shores on the road, 21-6.
"They have really good skill players," coach Thomas said. "They were stopped at the goaline twice by Gulf Shores, so the score didn't indicate."
"They have more speed this year than I can remember in a long time. The quarterback is good as well. Well coached with good scheme."
Coach Thomas knows very well who they consider as the toughest opponent in their region.
"No doubt about it, McGill-Toolen," he said.
Satsuma faces a lot of talent in their region from week to week. Coach Thomas shares more about the players in the area they must defend.
"The [Cullen] Wacker kid from McGill is the quarterback. He is the best football player and competitor I have ever seen. He doesn't have a ton of size, but don't tell him that," coach Thomas said.
"Also, D.J. Flucker from Foley is the biggest human being I have ever seen. I came from Baker, and we faced him as a sophomore. He was a stud then as well."
A special thanks to Coach Justin Thomas for spending time with ScoutSouth.com.
