Derek Smith was the premier running back at Hillcrest High School in Evergreen, Ala. as a junior, and he has received one scholarship offer while hitting the summer camp circuit.

Smith tells ScoutSouth.com about his summer experience.

"I had a good summer, and recruiting is going pretty well," Smith said from his home in Evergreen, (Ala). "I went to three camps, and I enjoyed each of them.

Southern Miss: "I actually received an offer from Southern Miss before I went to their day camp. I enjoyed the experience, and I really like the school."

"The thing that stands out about Southern Miss is the way they work. They're a small school, but they work as hard as any of the big schools. I really liked it there."

Alabama: "I went to Alabama's three-day camp, and it was the toughest camp I've ever been to. You felt like you wanted to quit, but I just worked through it and kept giving it my all. It was a tough camp but I really enjoyed it a lot."

"I ran a 4.40 forty at the Alabama camp. I had a 33.7 vertical jump, and I did the shuttle in 4.4 seconds. It was tough, but I learned a lot at that camp. They taught me to run lower through the line-of-scrimmage, and they taught me to run my passing routes very precisely."

"We stayed in the old dorms, and we got to see the campus and facilities. It was all very nice. I liked it a lot at Alabama. Yhey asked me to call them every other day, which I do."

Auburn: "I also went to Auburn's two-day camp. It wasn't as hard as the others, it was more laid back. I toured the campus at Auburn during their junior day, so I had already saw their campus. It's all very nice, and I enjoyed the camp pretty well."

UAB: "Coach Tim Bowens stays in contact with me, and I get a lot of mail from them and Alabama. I haven't been to camp at UAB. I have never been there at all."

When asked if an offer from the two in-state schools would make a difference in his recruitment, Smith replied, "Yes, if Alabama were to offer me I would consider myself a strong Alabama lean."

What are Smith's plans for the remainder of the summer?

"I'm finished with camps. I'm just working out very hard and waiting on the season to get here. I had a good time this summer going to the camps, and I feel that I learned some things that will help me on the field this fall. I think it was a very good experience for me," Smith concluded.

Derek Smith reports a 19 on his ACT and around a 3.0 in the classroom.
