Derek Smith, running back from Evergreen-Hillcrest, (Ala.), has flown under the recruiting radar…
ScoutSouth.com: Derek Smith
"I am receiving interest from Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and Troy," Derek Smith said from his home in Evergreen, (Ala.). "Auburn and Troy are showing the most interest in me right now."
Smith took three unofficial visits this spring and shared more insight of each program.
"I went to Alabama, Auburn and Troy's junior days," he said.
Alabama: "I really like Alabama. They are focused on academics as well as football, and I love how peaceful the campus is. I also like the coaching staff."
Auburn: "I liked Auburn's campus too. They have a lot of school spirit down there."
Troy: "I liked the visit to Troy. They are similar to Alabama in the way they focus on education and football."
Smith also tells us of his plans to attend camps this summer.
"I am going to a two-day camp at Auburn," he said. "I'm going to Alabama for a three-day camp later this summer, and I'm looking forward to that. I would really like to hear more from Alabama, and I hope to impress them at the camp."
While it might sound as though Derek Smith is leaning toward Alabama he remains, "open to any school."
The Jaguars return all on offense and only lose a defensive back and one linebacker off the starting defensive unit. Smith expects a big improvement from their 4-6 record last season.
"I believe we will be a much better team this year. We have a lot of people returning and that should help us a lot," Smith concluded.
