ScoutSouth.com: Gadsden City's Darrell Smith

Darrell Smith would probably project as the best player on most teams, but he isn’t on just any team as he shares the field with the nation’s top defensive back prospect in Dre Kirkpartick and wide receiver Kendall Kelly. The 6-3, 220-pound tight end/defensive end is receiving interest from the South’s finest schools and coaches. He gives us the latest news in his recruitment.

“Recruiting is going well,” Darrell Smith said from his home in Gadsden, (Ala). “LSU, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Alabama and Auburn are all recruiting me.”

“I went to Auburn’s A-Day game, and it was fine. The new offense looked like it’s going to be a good offense, and I got to talk to some coaches while I was there.”

“I talked to coach Tuberville and coach Price one-on-one, and they want me to come down there for camp. They said I would likely get an offer at camp."

“I like Auburn. They have nice facilities, and I like the coaches down there."

“I went down to watch Alabama practice last Wednesday. Coach took me and Kendall down there, and the practice was very intense. They were working hard. We didn’t get to talk to any of the coaches that day because they were busy in meetings and things while we were there, but I talked to the coaches at Junior Day.”

“I really like Coach Bobby Williams. He is a real nice guy, and we get along real well. Alabama told me they were going to offer me, but they weren’t sure at what position. Auburn offered me as a tight end which is what I play at Gadsden."

Summer plans?

“Alabama and Auburn are the only two schools I have visited, but I am planning on going to camps at LSU, Vandy, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama and Auburn. I plan on staying busy this summer,” Smith concluded.

Gadsden City will unofficially open their 2008 season playing Hoover in the Jamboree this fall.
