Alonzo Lawrence and the Mississippi All-Stars faded out the Alabama stars in a 26-7 victory Monday night at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Lawrence took on the grueling task of guarding Scout.com's number one player in the country, Julio Jones, and passed with flying colors. Jones managed just one reception for nine yards in the game. | |||

"We took a lot of stuff personally," Alonzo Lawrence from George County, Miss. told Scout.com's Andrew Bone. "When we went out to eat these guys (Alabama) were acting like they were all that. We just took it personal." Mississippi jumped on the board first when Chris Lofton hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Bret Jefcoat in the opening stanza. After a quick three-and-out by the Alabama offense, Jefcoat hit Scout.com five-star 6-foot-6 receiver DeAndre Brown on a slant route the talented wide out took 55 yards for another Mississippi touchdown. Jefcoat finished 8-of-15 passing for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Alabama, trailing 14-0, had a chance to get on the board at the end of the first quarter after a bad snap on a punt gave the Bama stars the ball inside the Mississippi 20-yard line. But Charles Mitchell picked off a Barrett Trotter pass in the end zone to start the second quarter, and all was but lost for the Alabama squad. The defense made a stand following the Trotter turnover, but disaster struck again following a 64-yard punt by Brett Baer that was downed at the Alabama 1-yard line. On the first play, Trotter dropped back to pass and was hit on a two step drop with the errant pass landing straight in the hands of a defensive back Charles Rancifer who needed just a few steps before reaching the end zone to put Mississippi up 20-0 with 9:35 remaining in the first half. Trotter, who was 11-15 passing for 117 yards but three interceptions (two for touchdowns), finally got things going to start the third quarter as the Auburn commitment drove the Alabama team straight down the field before hitting Dekendrick Moncrief on a perfectly thrown ball in corner of the end zone to close the gap to 20-7 and seemingly give the momentum to Alabama early in the third quarter. Scout.com four-star prospect Jerrell Harris recovered a fumble for Alabama on Mississippi's ensuing possession, but the momentum was quickly shifted when Lawrence stepped in front of Jones and picked off another Trotter pass taking it 94-yards for a game-changing touchdown.
Alonzo Lawrence Shut Down the Nation's Top Receiver Julio Jones The play turned out to be the final score of the night for either team, giving Mississippi a 26-7 win. Gadsden City's Jerrell Harris led the Alabama defense with nine tackles. William Green of Spain Park and Kynjee Cotton of Daphne had six stops each while Charles Mitchell of Clarksdale had eight tackles for Mississippi. Mississippi had four interceptions with Mitchell, Lawrence, Derrick Herman and Charles Rancifer collecting one each. (return to front page here) |
