Graduating several seniors last year has left the Tigers with a young team and an opening record of 3-3, already accumulating more losses than they had all season last year. Last season, the Tigers fought their way to the 1A State Championship game where they lost to Sweet Water, giving them an overall record of 13-2.
The team’s youth aside, McWhorter acknowledges his four seniors who he does have and the solid leadership and contributions on the field they each have brought this season. Blake Leach, Javon Brown, Luke May and Buddy Henderson are the team’s lone seniors.
A key problem the Tigers have had this season is turnovers, and McWhorter is naturally stressing eliminating turnovers from their game as much as possible.
“The thing with a young team is that you have to be as consistent as possible,” McWhorter said. “We’ve tried to stress cutting down on our turnovers all year and especially in the past few games. They’ve really been hurting us, and at any level, a team that turns the ball over is not going to be very successful. So we’re going in [Friday] night trying to take care of the ball better and avoid turnovers.”
McWhorter, in his second year as head coach at Cedar Bluff, has the same goals for his team every year, and his goals are consistent with those of most coaches. He expects his team to compete for a top spot in the region and hopefully head deep into the playoffs.
“Those goals are still alive, and that’s what we’re working for,” added McWhorter.
To help keep those goals alive, however, the Tigers will need to limit its turnovers and pull out a win over Spring Garden (2-4) Friday at home.
