ScoutSouth.com: Class 2A Games of Week
Pickens County Defensive End Michael Williams
By

University of Alabama fans in town for homecoming can get a good two for one deal this week when verbal commitments line up on both sides of the ball. Tenth ranked Pickens County (4-1; 3-0) travels the short distance to play the fifth ranked American Christian Patriots (5-0; 3-0).
Senior tight end and defensive end
Michael Williams
(6-6, 255) will play for the Tornadoes and
Brad Smelly
(6-3, 215) is the quarterback for the Patriots.
Coach Jack Cook's Pickens County crew are coming off of a huge win over 3A ranked and undefeated Aliceville (4-1). American Christian took on 4A Holt (1-4) 47-8.
Yratings.com shows American Christian as a six point favorite. I'm going with Pickens County and their defense to try and limit the damage from Smelley and senior wide receiver
Johnny Shuttlesworth.
Freedom Field
The second ranked
Leroy
Bears (4-1; 3-0) are coming off a defeat by No.1 1A Sweet Water 35-14. They will host seventh ranked
Flomaton
(5-0; 3-0) in a region heavyweight battle.
Some will say Leroy is struggling due to the loss to Sweet Water, but Coach Powell had some injuries on the Bears’ squad. There was no way he would have risked them against a non-region opponent when their biggest game, thus far, was on the horizon against the Hurricanes.
Junior quarterback
Clint Moseley
(6-4, 200) is a great talent. You should see him sign a Division-1 scholarship in 2009.
Flomaton comes into this game without a serious threat against them in the last four games. They have destroyed the competition 180-37. Junior running back
Tony Ellis
is coming off back-to-back 200+ yard games. Coach Doug Vickery will have his squad ready. If the injuries are still hampering Leroy, look out.
Palmer Stadium
Yratings.com rates Leroy a one point favorite.
Sixth ranked
Houston Academy
(5-0; 3-0) will travel to
Wicksbug
(5-0; 3-0) in a region bout. Both teams are undefeated overall.
Houston Academy is doing it with defense, having scored no more than 20 points in four of their wins.
Wicksburg has a senior laden team that includes quarterback
Blake Wallace
(6-0, 170). Wallace led the squad to a rivalry win over 1A Florala (4-1; 3-0) 23-21, the fist defeat for the Wildcats this season.
Houston Academy had their most effective scoring outing when they took on 3A Slocomb (2-3) and won 28-9. Coach Jimmy Addison took the Houston Academy job this year from Rodney Dollar who moved on to 5A Tallassee, and the Raiders have not missed a beat.
Panthers Field
Yratings.com lists Wicksburg as an 11 point favorite. I'll go along with that citing their homefield advantage.
The fourth ranked
Fyffe
Red Devils (5-0; 3-0) in ScoutSouth.com's Coaches Poll will play host to
Piedmont
(4-1; 3-0) in what could be a true test for Coach Benefield's Devils.
Coach Steve Smith's Bulldogs were 7-4 last season, and this year are undefeated through the next four games after suffering a defeat at the hands of a strong 2A Woodland (4-1; 3-0) squad out of the box.
Running backs
D’Eric Jackson
and
Coulter Green
put on a show last week in a 27-0 victory over 2A Ohatchee (2-2). Junior defensive back
Chris Griffie
had a 95-yard interception returned for a score.
The Red Devils are always a force in 2A football. The team is led by Coach Paul Benefield who has a 143-36 mark as a head coach. Offensive lineman
Chris Graben
(6-3, 305) is Fyffe's big man up front. Graben was ASWA All-State in 2006.
Chris Johnson
(6-2, 190) is a standout at linebacker.
Fyffe Stadium
Fyffe is a 23 point favorite on yratings.com, and I will go along with the winner. But maybe not by that much.
Other 2A games:
Addison
(4-1; 3-0) will travel to
Tanner
(3-2; 2-1)
No.10
Highland Home
(4-1; 2-1) will host
Luverne
(3-2; 2-1)
Ranburne
(4-1; 2-1) will visit
Lineville
(3-2; 3-0)
