“Í played wide receiver and outside linebacker last year, but I’m moving to running back this season,” Marcus Carthage said from his home in Winfield, (Ala.). “I’ll still be playing outside linebacker though.”
Carthage possesses the athletic ability to play several positions for the Pirates and only takes a few snaps from scrimmage to see his natural position is linebacker. Carthage is quick to the ball with his 4.5 speed, and a sure tackler.
Carthage is also hearing from several colleges as he gets ready to enter his senior season.
“I have been hearing from Birmingham Southern, West Alabama and Faulkner,” he said. “I have also been filling out a lot of questionnaires from other schools.”
“I only went to camp at Alabama. I made the ‘All-Saban Team’ after Courtney Upshaw chose not to participate on the last day. I was running with the second team until he dropped out. I finished up with the first team linebackers at the camp. I had a good time."
Carthage hasn’t planned any official visits as he waits to see what the season brings his way.
“I’m going to take my ACT for the first time this month. I think several teams are waiting to see what my score is,” he explained.
Carthage projects as a major contributor to the Pirate football team as they try to make a run at the 3-A state title. Winfield has reached the semi-finals four of the last five years, while advancing to the finals once only to lose to eventual state champion, Oneonta High School.
Winfield will play Fayette, (Ala.) August 23rd in their jamboree. The Pirates will open the regular season hosting the Sulligent Blue Devils August 31.
