Leroy Bears Dominate

Leroy flexed its muscle early and often in this game. With starting safety and punt returner Grant Brown out with a torn ACL, his back-up Erik Davis returned the opening kick-off 72 yards to the Excel 12-yard line. The Bears set the tone early.

It took the Bears all of two plays to put it in the endzone. Quarterback Clint Mosely threw an eight yard touchdown pass to Patrick Rivers in the corner of the endzone. The PAT was no good.

Mosely, a 6-3, 190-pound sophomore, finished the night 6of 9 for 190 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bears kicked off to Excel with a 6-0 lead. Excel managed to pick up one first down on a well thrown pass to standout receiver Marcus Anderson before the Bear-D forced them to punt.

The Bears got a five yard loss on first down before lightning struck again. Mosely hit Johnny Williams in the flats and the speedy receiver took care of the rest--taking the ball 80 yards for his first of two touchdowns of the night. The Bears converted the two point conversion to take the 14-0 lead.

If the junior wideout is a unknown now, it will not take long for this speedy receiver to start turning some heads. Williams says he was clocked at 4.38 in the 40-yard dash at Auburn. He had three touches on the night for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Williams says he set a goal to get a 100 yards receiving a game and with Clint Mosely under center anything is possible.

Excel cannot budge the stingy Bear defense, with Chris Weaver sacking the quarterback on 3rd and 10. After a 16-yard punt return the Leroy offense stalls and is held to a three and out. A 35-yard punt left the Panthers with great field position and appeared they were not going to waste it. They immediately started moving the chains.

Marcus Anderson had another big catch for 20 yards setting up the Panthers first and 10 at the Bear 15-yard line trailing 14-0 midway through the second quarter. On first and second down the Panthers managed just 6 yards.

On third and four from the Bear nine yard line, Excel had a chance to make it a game, but Chris Weaver had a different idea. Weaver came up and stuck the Excel runner and scooped up the fumble returning 96 yards for the Leroy touchdown and knock-out punch--21-0 Leroy with 6:46 to go in the half.

After yet another three and out by the Excel Panthers, Leroy punt returner Patrick Rivers, returned the punt 52 yards to the Panther 15. Leroy fullback Deitrick Powell bulldozed his way to the end zone on two powerful runs of 10 and five yards. The PAT was good and the Bears own a 28-0 first half lead.

Excel took the second-half kick-off and marched straight down the field before allowing the Bears, Craig Weaver, to intercept a pass in the end zone.

After a couple first downs by the Bears, Leroy tried the swing pass again and got another huge play from Johnny Williams. This time a 64-yard touchdown. The Bears Patrick Rivers avoided a blocked PAT and scampered to the end zone for the two point conversion and the 36-0 Leroy lead, the game's final score.

Although the Bears got a huge win, they lost starting defensive player Jherett McLeary for the year with a possible ACL tear.

Leroy Coach Danny Powell says his team needs to be more consistent on offense, "We are making a lot of big plays, but no sustained drives," he said. The Bears managed 190 yards passing and just 65 yards rushing.
