Clay County vs. Leeds
Posted Sep 14, 2006

Clay County has been rolling through 3A teams like a knife through hot butter, so what’s changed? Well, they did move up from 2A for the 2006 season. The Panthers seemingly have no weakness, at least no glaring weakness. They have speed at every position, they score touchdowns in bunches and their defense is stymieing to opposing offenses.

The Panthers offense is lethal with running back, and third-year starter, Lanell Wilson able to score from anywhere on the field at anytime. Coach Danny Horn expected big things from his offense this season and they have delivered, so far.

The Panther defense gave up 5.9 points per game last season in class 2A. The defense has six starters returning from last season, and once again, they’re very strong. They have managed to hold two opponents to a total of six points. That’s 3.0 points per game.

The Leeds Green Wave has the best opportunity to knock off the Clay County Panthers this week, because they’re the next team to play them. Leeds will bring a confident team into the contest tomorrow night as they’re riding high after a 2-0 start and a big win over Hokes Bluff, which was ranked No. 6 before running into the Green Wave. The team is led by four-year starter Mike Laster, who says he feels comfortable this season as the starting quarterback.

The Green Wave defense appears to be the strength of their team, holding Hokes Bluff to only 145 total yards of offense, and seven points last week. Leeds has given up seven points in two games for an average of 3.5 points per game. The Green Wave wants to get back to their winning tradition. A win this week, over region foe Clay County, would certainly prove Leeds is rolling again.

Clay County wins this one as Leeds continues to rebuild their program. Coach Etheredge has things headed in the right direction.

Other Green Wave players to watch are Randel Kelley, Darryl Coleman and Randon Carnathan.

Players to keep an eye on are J.D. Williams and Chase Horn, not to mention a host of others. Also, keep both eyes on the defense. source for Alabama High School football.
