"I received an offer from Stanford," said Byron Clear from Hoover, (Ala.). "Coach [Walt] Harris took me in his office and as soon as he saw me he offered. They saw the Duke combine tape and my 7-on-7 tape. They said I solidified myself as a great athlete."
"They knew I was right for their school. They took us around campus and showed us the ropes. Compared to Alabama it looks like paradise."
"They said a lot of classes are around each other. I met with the dean today. She told me about some classes I would have to take. They have really good academics. Students that graduate usually start out with 80-100,000 thousand dollars a year. I would have a good life after college."
"The weather was beautiful. I didn't realize how good their computer engineering program was. Hewlett Packard and Silicon Valley are real close to the campus. They have close to 1,000 majors. They said people have come there and made up their own majors as well."
"Coach Harris is a top notch coach. My dad attended the same school as him. We got to place our judgment on all the coaches. They really have a top notch program."
Clear missed four games during his junior season due to an ankle injury. He played defensive end but will move to outside linebacker for his new team. Stanford is recruiting him as a linebacker as well.
"They love the way I run," he said. "At the combine I went up against a 6-8, 300-pound guy and got by him really quick. They loved it. They said they could move me. I weigh 215-pounds right now, but they said I could easily gain more weight and maintain my speed." "The coaches told me how pleased they are and how I go after the players and cover. I can play WILL or SAM linebacker. They said I am too fast to play the defensive end position. They said I'm faster and weigh more than guys that came in. They can only imagine how big and fast I will be in a year."
"They saw my track tape as well. I do the triple jump, long jump and 4x100. They saw my 7-on-7 tape as well. They noticed where I would always run to the ball no matter which side of the field. I am always full hustle. They saw the hustling."
"They were really pleased with everything they saw. I met a lot of players. There was a receiver I met, and he plans to major in the same thing I am. He threw the ball around with Brandon [Clear]. It was really good to be around that caliber of players. Stanford is at the top right now."
Clear is hearing from numerous programs in addition to Stanford.
"I am interested in anyone that is interested in giving me a scholarship. I want to get a quality education and play for a quality football team. If they can provide me that, that is all I need."
