Schilling talks top 10

Gavin Schilling

There might not be a class of 2013 prospect who has seen his stock rise more this season than Gavin Schilling.

Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep power forward Gavin Schilling is probably one of the hottest targets on the recruiting trail in the class of 2013. With a group of 10 schools after him having offered, Schilling is now looking to take more visits and is always the subject of coaches evaluations.

Ever since moving from Chicago (Ill.) De LaSalle to Findlay Prep, Schilling has been on a man on a mission to get better.

"Coming to Findlay Prep was a great decision for me," said Schilling. "I have improved a lot physically and with my game. I am just working very hard in all aspects of the game, so it has been good."

Recruiting wise things have been crazy for Schilling. His decision to wait out the early signing period and stay open until the spring was big for his recruitment.

"As soon as I came to Findlay a lot of new schools started contacting me and things like that," Schilling explained. "Now I have a top 10 list and everything is going great."

The schools making the cut for Schilling are UCLA, Michigan State, Ohio State, Georgetown, Minnesota, Villanova, Missouri, Kansas State, Oregon State, and Oklahoma State.

As of now Schilling has only taken one official visit to Minnesota and an unofficial to Michigan State. He is planning however to narrow things down again in the next week or so and then begin planning the rest of his visits.

Minnesota Head Coach Tubby Smith was in the gym on Friday night to watch Schilling. Schilling says he likes Minnesota and had a good trip to the school.

"I like Minnesota a lot," Schilling explained. "I like Coach Smith a lot. He is a great guy and a great coach. Also he will help me develop my game when I get over there. It was very cool down there and I had fun."

One thing Minnesota has working in their favor are their two other commitments, Alvin Ellis and Alex Foster. Both were high school teammates of Schilling last season.

"I like playing with them, and we are great friends off the court," said Schilling. "On the court we get along also, so that is a good option."

Also Tom Izzo from Michigan State was watching Schilling on Friday, and the Spartans have made a big move recently in his recruitment hosting Schilling on a visit and making an offer.

"When I was on break in Chicago I took an unofficial visit down there and had a great time," said Schilling of Michigan State. "I saw practice and got to talk with Coach Izzo. He is a great guy. My family liked Coach Izzo so they are definitely an option."

He continued about his MSU visit, "I really liked that trip. I liked the campus, and it is a great group of guys. I liked it very much over there."

Ohio State also dispatched assistant coach Jeff Boals on Friday night, and with a Buckeye offer in hand, Schilling is taking a long look at the school.

"Coach Boals is a great guy and I have a good relationship with him," said Schilling. "We talk about Ohio State and how I can be an impact player in that program. Coach (Thad) Matta is also a great guy."

Another school which has connection with Schilling is UCLA. The Bruins have offered and also have his current Findlay teammate Allerik Freeman doing a little bit of recruiting on their behalf.

"We joke and talk a lot," said Schilling of Freeman recruiting him to UCLA. "He is a good friend of mine and he is always talking to me about coming to UCLA, so they are definitely an option."

For now Schilling is content to take his visits and let this recruitment play out. He however does know what he is looking for in the school that he will choose.

"I look for a great academic system, a fast style of play, and finally a good relationship with the coaching staff," said Schilling.
